400 km/h High-Speed Train Enters the "Uncharted Territory"

On the evening of July 20, a freight train carrying two extra-large transformers, each weighing 330 tons, departed from Shanghai Minhang Railway Station, heading to Liupanshui city in Guizhou. This marked the inaugural operation of the Yangtze River Delta railway's first transport of extra-large transformers. During the 12th World Congress on High Speed Rail on July 9, the National Railway Test Center in Beijing Chaoyang attracted great attention from domestic and international participants. Here, attendees eagerly experienced the world’s first new-generation high speed EMU, the CR450, with a test running speed of 450 km/h and a commercial operating speed of 400 km/h.

Currently, the CR450 EMU has completed the prototype rollout, type testing and interoperability debugging. It is undergoing assessment trials and performance validation to prepare for on-line trial operations.

"This signifies that China's railway has breaks into uncharted territory," said Zhao Hongwei, chief technical expert of the Fuxing EMU train and chief researcher at China Academy of Railway Sciences. To raise the commercial operating speed by another 50 km/h, CR has led the formation of an innovation consortium, overcoming challenges such as permanent magnet traction, aerodynamic drag reduction and short-distance braking. It is the first in the world to establish a technical system for 400 km/h EMUs.
